Whatcha. My remote key frame has snapped. I am looking at either a direct swap or one of the cheaper flip keys. Has anyone swapped to a flip and if so was it worth the effort does it work well etc?

Not done it myself, but I have looked at the cases on eBay for about £6.99 ish.
The feedback (on eBay) suggests they work but the case quality is not on the high side. I doubt this matters that much if it's a working vehicle, so on paper it looks like a good idea. Can't find any feedback on the durability of the case, but it's not expensive.

You could be the first to try the flip case on here, if you do interested in what you think of them.

Yes I suspect you are right about the material quality and durability but having paid 6.35 for a flip and normal blade key I have options going forward that haven't broken the bank.

Ok so I have now got my flip key in service and it is good. With one minor caveat, the new button rubber that is supplied with the blank is fractionally too deep to be used in the existing remote clamshell which is unfortunate for me as my button pad while functional is quite worn. Other than that the blank was easily indexed to be cut and the body seems to be suitably robust and clearance of the ignition is spot on. Very happy.

If you want a high quality key case, why not buy a used key from a dead Jimny from a vehicle junkyard, and swap over your key and electronics into that case?

Because on mine at least the blade is bonded to the grayish centre structure of the body. And my blade was also worn by about half a millimetre on the serrated edge compared to the unused spare which amazed my locksmith that it was still functional.

The lock wears grooves to match it, as the wear is gradual, the wafers stick up a fraction and rub the outer part of the lock, as the wear increases, they stick up more and wear it more.

So any key with a profile between the new and old will fit the now worn lock.

I'd share his amazement if the worn out key will open an unused lock- the passenger door or the boot maybe?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
