That's probably going to be electrical. There's a complete fault finding procedure in the Jimny information wiki at the top of the page.

One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

Was your foot on the clutch, my 2005 won't do it unless it is.

Yeah, all that. Got an '08 at home that sometimes needs encouragement (neutral, clutch in and perhaps some rocking on the gears). One tip I've yet to try - park the car on level ground (handbrake on, all best practices observed) apply your angry face and dance around the car three times in an anticlockwise direction. I think this one is to embarrass the car into submission.

So on mine recently I had electrical issues (could not get 4WD at all) and it turned out to be a broken wire on the front switch on the transfer box. But in fault finding I ended up taking both the 4WD switch and the 4WD-L switch out to investigate.
When you press the button on the dash do you hear movement in the transfer box?
Might be worth a look underneath at the back switch to see if the wires to it are good and they are still plugged in.
As I understand it, once you are in 4WD and press the button for 4WD-L then the switch on tx box has to sense the movement within 2 seconds or it fails to engage.

This thread explains a lot and has pictures of where I started to look. Don't forget the little ball bearing behind the switch if you try to take it out.

I think you need to start at Switch 29 in the picture.

...and yes you have to drain the fluid out, so make sure the filler can open before you start!
