I can't believe how many late jimnys have failed mot on corrosion 2010 and need parts or welding for rust issues..
That's shocking

Don't forget that these are very cheap cars and are built to a budget. One of the ways that is achieved is by only having the essential rust proofing to get past the warranty. Fortunately there are enough out there to find good ones that people like me have looked after and cared for.

But when you consider that the next nearest competitor is say a Wrangler at 50k or so. Not saying 20k is pocket change far from it, but like for like capabilities put Jimny into a significantly higher price point.

Yeah i see what you mean, i think ive been spoilt having only had volkswagens for well over 20 years,
Vw's are not by any means trouble free but they dont rust..
My caddy maxi is 2010 extensively modified especially the underside with mostly audi tt and mk5 golf gti running gear and kw v2 fully adjustable's a full camper interior... but i don't need to worry about it rusting just yet lol

But they weren't £20k.

In 2015 they were £12k new but that was list price, which they never sold for.

So they were a cheap car!

I suspect that in a fairly short time they will not be able to be selling them at list prices again once all the hipster types have satisfied their curiosity and demand goes back to normal levels.

Funny. Here my 2005 jimny has much less rust than my 2006 vw T5. Many vw passat, golf, Audi A4, from 99 gets scrapped for the rust. Very few jimny does.
Just because the Norwegian suzuki importer treats them.

Norway 2005 Jimny M16A VVT, 235 BFG MT, 2" Trailmaster, ARB rear lck, 17%/87% high/low gears.

A 2015 is selling for more than 12k now..
So if that was list price and your saying they didnt sell for that what did they sell for.....?
Obviously the 20k price tag i was referring to now.

Above is an example of the dealer rust proofing them in norway, is this also an option in the uk when new...?
And was it back in 2004 5 6 7 8 onwards

Jimny's tend to have a strong residual price. When I looked at a new GEN3 late 2017 I recall I could get one for under 14k, but I did not go for it in the end, I opted instead for secondhand. It proved difficult to find one I was happy with, but in my travels I came to the conclusion that underbody rust is a potential problem. They all do it, but as Lambert indicated the way the previous owner(s) has used and maintained the vehicle plays a big part.
In the end I found a low mileage one owner 2009 with minimal rust, the garage from which I purchased it from put in on the ramps so I could inspect it's condition before purchase. Now fully treated and waxoyl'ed it's proving to be a great fun vehicle.

But I do agree that the level of rust is very surprising for a vehicle supplied today. Rust has not been on my radar since my Ford Escort MK2, I've had a string of cars, cheap bangers and one brand new C1 in 2011, none have shown any signs of underbody rust that has required treating.

But that's just the way it is if you want a Jimny, irrespective of how much it cost new. It's too early to comment on the GEN4, but Suzuki have implied (fingers crossed) that they have improved things, but they won't rust if you can't get one, so maybe that's the improvement

Keep looking, good ones are out there, and when you find one you will just Smile and Smile.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

When we got Dreadnaught new in 2011 list for a fully equipped sz4 which was top spec then was from memory 12750ish we paid 11 ish I seem to remember. We paid significantly more than that for the 3 year old 2016 earlier this year even with the premium from being an automatic. So yeah they are not cheap like a polo or something else the same size but they also hold their value in a way that a fiesta or corsa never ever will so what you loose buying you gain selling.
