Jimnys are an old design so older ones will rust so look out for the common places to look.
Plenty of info on the forum.
Even newer ones rust and mid 2007/8 models (VVT) had problem gearboxes although most should have been sorted by now.
Probably the non VVT models 2002-5 would be the best to go for.
You might get some offers on here?

Rust is the main thing i'll look for.
I'd be happy to buy one off a member on here, assuming I don't need to travel too far.
I see a lot of comments about a wobble at 50mph, what is that about?

It's usually because the kingpins or bearings are worn on the stub axle.
The Jimny is a bit susceptible to anything out of balance at the front.
There is "death wobble" which is a severe and the lesser wobble which is usually tyres.
If it has been highly modified alignment is sometimes critical.
Anyway if buying a standard one you'll soon know after a drive.
Nothing to worry about just walk away.

Okay.
Which models of the Jimny come with air con? A/C is fairly important to me as I can't stand hot cars in the summer. Am I asking too much to get one with air con, minimal rust and 50k(ish) miles for £4.5k max?

You'll have to do a bit of research but you should find one.

What about this one? Mileage is a tad high, but I only do 7k a year or so, so it wouldnt be an issue for a while.

This appears to be the interim facelift model where they changed over to push button 4WD selection (instead of levers) and it has the facelift dash. It retains the older model bumpers which means it will accept larger tyres more easily if you wanted to.
Some offroaders want the simplicity of mechanical levers but I've found, for the road, they are quite good as you can easily switch between 2wd/4wd on the intermittent dry/wet/icy/snowy conditions we usually get.
Can't comment on the price as there are a lot of factors to consider eg dealer/private warranty etc.
It is low mileage as my 2008 is now on 80K
Check rust in the boot under the carpet at the door and around the inside of the headlamps.
Make sure the 4wd is engaging and working. I see the dealer has gravel so that is ideal.
It appears to have some damage to the bumpers so that could be a negotiation on price??
The main thing is you need to try one out to see if you like it.
All you can do is compare it with similar years/prices to get an idea of value.
I have noticed prices vary depending on what part of the country the car is in.

Depends on what they are. The Jimny is an old design in car terms so it's fairly easy to use a spanner on it.
Mine is just starting to suffer the usual old car stuff eg brake pipes, shocks etc.
A lot depends on the service history and if it has been looked after but any car with a low mileage is going to suffer as well due to systems not being used.
Biggest expense(if you have to use a garage) would probably be kingpins and bushes.
Go and see a few and you'll soon know which ones are better than others.
Keep away from any that have been modified and
used offroad lol

It was a lovely car. Not a spot of rust, just had lots of work done, full service history. But the issue was, I don't fit in them. I thought with seat rail extenders that I would, but there is no way I could.
It is sad, because it was a very good Jimny.
I test drove a 3dr Rav 4 and grand vitara and both were not nice to drive.

So that leaves me with the issue of finding a replacement that isn't a Jimny. I'm not sure if 4wd if necessary, as I don't do any sort of off roading, but a somewhat decent ground clearance is preferable. I might be better off with an automatic after all, given my issues with leg room, so one leg won't have to move at all...

Any ideas? :)

Well they do have an auto version??
I know there were some posts about making extenders some time ago.
What height are you?? If you are used to straight legs/straight arms it's not that sort of car as it's more of a truck position.
I know the door switches used to annoy me as they dig in to my right knee.
