Jimny transmission problem? was created by rubinow
Hi,
I am new to the forum , I have a 2001 Jimny Auto and when driving the Jimny seemed to lose power and was crawling even when foot pedal
pressed to floor, I pulled over and after 30 min tried again. All was good until after 300 metres the problem returned. This happens after a minute of driving. If I wait 20 or 30 min it is normal again until.
The mechanic told me I need my transmission rebuilt but I suspect a sensor.
What do you guys think?

I doubt it needs a full re-build. A change of automatic transmission fluid would be my first thing to do.

When ATF gets old and burnt it cannot work as a hydraulic fluid.

If that doesn't work I've no idea as I'm not knowledgeable enough about auto's.

It worked wonders on my Beemer though.

Pull the box dipstick and check the colour of the oil. If really black then it will need replacing. Smell it and if it smells burnt then the clutches have probably worn out and it will need a rebuild/swap

Yes, as Martin says, these are classic symptoms of a blocked cat. How blinkered I was with the idea of the gearbox in mind.

In the first post it was difficult to ascertain if it was engine or box related. If you had defined the engine revs as opposed to power then it would have pointed to the engine i.e engine revving high but car going slow seemingly with no power or pedal to the floor but engine not revving. Still a cat defect will be cheaper than a box defect which is good for you.

How can I rule out that its not gearbox as mechanic says it is for sure.

As I said check the condition of the oil in the gearbox as a starter. And in neutral does the engine rev OK

How did you check the revs? I would suggest that you take it out for a drive and when you get the problem with your foot on the floor move it into neutral with it still on the floor and if it revs freely then the fault is the box. If you have already done that then the chances are it is the box. Things to go wrong are basically the torque converter, which is not the box but the bit that is the substitute for the clutch then in the box itself the valve block or the clutches.

When a cat gets blocked, the exhaust builds up and gets to the point where the back pressure is too much and it runs badly.

Give it chance (20 minutes) to vent and it's fine until it builds up again.
