Tyres, How Come?

Tyres, How Come? was created by grumyoldjoe
No one ever recommends Bridgestone Duellers for the Jimny despite the fact they are shipped with new cars?
The reason I ask is I was talking to a couple of owners of Isuzu pick ups and they have duellers fitted and swear by them for everything they do. (one of which is a farmer)
Is it just a cosmetic thing with Jimny owners that make them go for grabbers for example ? or are duellers bad ?
Had mine fitted since new and had no issues in ice/snow etc.
Loads of threads/posts on tyre choices on the site but that adds to confusion for next tyre choice to be honest.
Thanks in advance.

There used to be a theory that if they were manufactured in Japan, they were good....but if manuf. In any of the other SE Asian or S American plants they would, by default, be crap.
I've had 4 Jimnys, 3 of which came supplied with Duellers, and never had a problem.
Driving styles will, of course, give the greatest variations in performance results....perhaps they don't suit a more aggressive style, but PERSONALLY, when they required replacing I changed them for Grabbers simply because the Grabber is a brilliant A/T tyre, and looks much more the part, too ;)
If all you want from your Jim is to get you safely from A-B, I suppose you can't fault the Duellers.

Other opinions are available, Joe....but not from me !!!!!

Gus.

I'm a farmer working a hill farm and I have Japanese duelers on and i can't find fault with them either on the tracks or actual tarmacadam they hold on tenaciously even when in full tyre slayer mode. They don't like wet grass but not much else does either. The only thing that I dislike about them is they don't last that long which is why before winter they will be replaced with bfg urban terrain or more likely the identical but less expensive kleber citylander. These have the same eu label of e fuel and c wet grip as the best duelers but are significantly quieter at 70db not 74db for the duelers. The other thing is that the same tyre from Bridgestone comes with a few different eu labels ranging from e and c to f and f for fuel and grip, meaning that there is something in what gus is saying that the origin of the tyre has a bearing on it's ability to work.

Both bf goodrich and kleber are wholly owned subsidiaries of Michelin, bfg whilst quite expensive are the mid value brand and kleber the budget one though that is relative to Michelin . Also if you go away from the stock 205 70r15 size you will find a greater variety of high quality specialist off road biased tyres with bfg. They also have a reputation for exceptional longevity and being highly rugged. I know it might make me sound like a massive fanboy but the bfg mud and also the all terrain are essentially the industry standard.

Don't forget the Yokohama Geolander. One of the best all round tyres I have ever used.
Excellent performance and mid priced.

hehe, I used to use my imagination.

I have 2 sets of Duelers at the moment; one set is on my FL and the other set is stored having been on my Paj for aeons. I love them but when I wanted to buy a pair I seemed to have trouble so my Paj has got Enduros on just now.

Gus.

Whilst browsing I asked the people at Black Circle if they could tell me where my new tyres were made IF I ordered from them.
They replied that tyres are made all over the world and by various companies therefore a difficult question to answer,
I would have thought they would need to know this info for tracability purposes ?

I bought my Jimny at 7 years old with low mileage and the original tyres - the spare had never been taken off the back. They were unevenly worn, hardened rubber and not very grippy, so like others I changed them. I am pleased with the Geolandars, wet grip is much better and good on muddy surfaces.
Is it possible that experience on here is based on out of date Duelers rather than new ones?

Ray
