When was that changed?

AFAIK, at a roadside pull, they look at the plated gross train weight of your vehicle (mine is 2720 Kg), subtract the vehicle MAM (1420 Kg) leaves 1300Kg, and look at the trailers plated MAM, if it is more than 1300 Kg, you're nicked. Doesn't matter what the trailer or car actually weighs (unless you are over the MAM on either, but that is weighbridge time) it's what is on the plate.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Changed a couple of years ago now. Ntta and others confirm, I have been awake too long to find the actual legislation. The problem was if you were over the mam but not so much as to obviously affect the look of the rig but your plates matched they were letting you on your way. Now I understand that they can do roadside weighings with portable load cells as a guide before punting you to a weighbridge but that information could be apocryphal as I have never seen it myself but it is plausible.
