Hand winch, any good?? Waste of money? was created by Tomhorntoad
Seen a few of these online

Seeing that I can't afford a full on winch. Are these any good as a get out of jail card?

Was going to try one myself seen a guy use one to recover a shogun last weekend and was slow and laborious but better than nothing you can do similar with a high lift but more faffing about. the chap with the shogun says they dont last long if you use them though so treat as a throw away item eg... Iif you want one for an emergency great, if you want one to use regularly buy a poper one (t-max do a nice one)

Tirfor hand winches are the ones but expensive.

The problem with the above picrured hand winch is the very short pull............if your stuck 20meters into a bog its not going to help but to pull you back a couple of meters after getting beached im sure it would be fine. You'd need a ground anchor aswell really.

I think Woffle Boards would be more useful.

This ^ Ive used a hand winch before when my mates truck was only just stuck, was a lot of effort just because you dont want to save up for a winch. The hand winch you linked from ebay looks abit flimsy. Handle looks like it will twist because its 2 bits of flat plate put together.

I had one a few years ago and you can modify the way it works to give you longer reach on the cable but it takes down the pull strength of the winch also if you put toooooo much power through the lever ie have a massive set of arms all you will do is crush the centre of the drum and then it's nakerd anyway... I would say a set of tyres would do you better than one of these or save up for a cheap 12v winch

I think its a important piece the have in the truck never used it except to test it, it worked well but slow and short, but if you winch failed better than being stuck

That hand winch would never have pulled me out of the places I've had to use my proper winch.
