Ive got them on the inside, purely as a deterent, everyone knows a tin opener can slice open the sides!!! 
Any passing theif would think twice about smashing and grabbing on a truck with grills - take them a bit longer. Might have to get me self a "Caution beware of the dog sign" for added effect. Its also handy having them on the inside, as i can hang stuff of them
