I have 215/75's and get stuck sometimes. My mate has 30" special tracks. It's undeniable that the extra ground clearance gives an advantage off road, as he has rolled straight over things I've been stuck on.

If you have a deep rut to navigate, it's all about ground clearance, end of.

Also, a larger tyre will roll over an obstacle easier than a smaller tyre, as exemplified by mountain bikers gradually transitioning from 26" rims to 29" rims.

That's two arguments for larger tyres not being "just for show"

Furthermore, you don't need a rocklobster to drive offroad, I manage just fine without and I don't feel gutless or underpowered. I greenlane and P&P.

I wrote that a good handful of users on this forum would do fine with 215s. It wasn't pointed at you or anyone else in particular. Just to point out that more than one Jimny on this forum is fitted for more offroading than it evers sees.

And no, of couse a rocklobster is not mandatory. But a really nice thing to have, especially if you do some winching.
I also wrote that for occasional offroading, you'd do just fine with standard transferbox for 215 tyres.

FOR ME its always been the bigger the tyre the better it is in offroad situations, the taller the profile clearly gives you more ground clearance under you diff which is a win win situation, but i do agree if you want to offroad with larger tyres it does make sense in fitted a lower ratio transfer box. unless you quick at changing clutches and enjoy slipping them,

I run 30s special tracks and with the larger tyres and added weight of winch,roll cage etc etc its crap offroad on the standard gearing,

Im running 33s 4:88 diffs with 5:1 transfer box and i have to say its awsome think for speed event it would be painfull tho i reckon pulling off in 5th low is where my old blue jim on 31s was in low 1st

Go 3" lift with 205/80/16 (stand 29") and never look back....... Apart from to laugh at everyone stuck who you've just past

im on 3" lift and 235 75 15 (29") they do me ok mite step up to 31s but my tyres are near new

with stock gearing?

stock gearing on 29" isn't that good can be used but will leave you wanting a lobster and burning out clutches

ohkay so i understand this but WHERE can you get rocklobsters can you buy a kit from anyone? how much are they? how do you fit them etc?
