right i know it reduces the gears to give more torque, n that is all i know do they effect 2wd ,4wd hi and 4wd low,can you mix n match to have better on road performance in 2wd and better off road performance in 4wd. are there different types of boxes to do certain things.thanks for any info i know some might have explained it before sometime but it seems like another language to me and im probably not the only one,ta.

The way it works is the Jimny transfer box is junk as its chain driven and can fail if you push it to hard.
Fit a SJ 410 transfer box known as a mini lobster and is gear driven will give you a reduction ratio of 2.5:1
Get a Rock lobster thats a combination of SJ413 and SJ410 and you can acheive a reduction ratio of around 4.1:1 or bite the bullet to the tune of £500 plus and put in a set of after market gears and and get 6:1 +.
Other problem is SJ case dont fit so you will need a after market mount these range in price in relation with what you want to use the truck for plus you will need a combination of SJ propshafts.
its all down to what you want to use the truck for Rock Crawling or puddle splashing on green lanes

I think what your asking is can you have a mix of on road speed and off road torque ......no .
Changing the t-box reduces speed in all gears , you gain loads in low but lose a little in high but as your probably fitting bigger tyres then this will compensate a fair bit

The 2.5:1 4.1:1 6.1:1 is the ratio of the RPM of the gearbox output shaft in realation to the speed of your axle propshafts.
In shourt the higher the ratio you go the slower the car will crawl downside is you also loose on top end speed.
But if you are crashing around on 33 inch super swampers with 5 inches of lift top end speed is the last thing you want unless you want to end up in the ditch.
Its all a pay off one for the other goes the same for the higher ratios you want to acheive higher the ratio the higher the cost

To go the mini lobster route with a 410 box you are looking at roughly:
410 box £50-£120 depending if your lucky or not
Front sj prop £20-£50
Middle sj prop £20-£40
Mounting brackets £50-300 depending which company you use
Bolt through h/d t/box mounts £30-£70 depending which company you use
Gear selector bending (do it yourself) or £15
Speedo gear & bracket £40-£100 depending which company you use
You also need the correct flange on the rear output of the t/box to be able to fit the speedo gear, which are quite rare.
I do the fitting kits and full on lobster boxes.
If you want any advise or need any parts pm me and I will help if I can
