Lambert wrote: Does having a floating rear not introduce the issue of needing custom shafts and therefore the problem of a readily available replacement if one dies? Or are the shafts donated from something else that happens to have the correct splines and length? Sounds cool though either way.

Correct. The shafts are custom made 4340 CroMo alloy HD jobs. I dont think they are the same as any donor vehicle unfortunately, however the weakest point (sacrificial part) of the whole assembly is the manual hubs, so hopefully were an issue to occur it would be the hub rather than the shaft to go first.

I can probably order spare shafts from the russian, but a quick google shows there are quite a few UK companies who produce custom shafts at varying prices. Might be worth taking a load of dimensions from the shafts before fitting just incase.

Sunday was a day out with Brett, Sniper, James and Kev in the Jimnys around the Peaks. Very pretty area, great lanes and company. Nice to see everyone again but Dave was greatly missed (along with S200KYS) :-(

Floating rears progress...

Trip to the scrapyard today to get some brake calipers and brackets from a VAG car. Was told MK4 golf, but actually got them from a skoda octavia (identical part). Right old fight to get them off as they are an allen key style bolt that holds the hangar onto the axles. Got them with a bit of the solid pipe still attached to allow me to try and use the flaring tool to join them to copper, which I can join to the existing splitter block on the axle pretty easily...

(that is after a good clean-up and regrease)

Tried loosley putting it all together as well...

Seems odd that all that (plus wheels) is attached to the rear axle casing by four M8 bolts :woohoo:   Might have to look into beefing that up a bit somehow.

Also found the ECU (behind the glovebox) and noted it is a 4 plug version, so I can use the wiring diagrams Martin kindly sent me to help with the upcoming throttle body & ECU conversion
