The smaller studs are obviously not strong enough to take the extra load when lengthened hence the increase in diameter. The loading on the bearings is of course substantially increased as a result of the wider wheel too.

only running 195's
it's just the alloy is much thicker
only leaving around 11mm for the nut to go on

235/85R16 Maxxis Bighorns on 16" Rims, 4:1 Rocklobster, Rear ARB locker and on-board air
Corrected arms all-round, rear disks, Recaro seats and harnesses

Some SJs were fitted with longer studs, probably due to wheels that were fitted. It is possible to find these studs but its not easy. I have some on my Jimny and will take a picture if I remember to show they exist (P.S I am still one short for my own collection!)

The front studs are generally longer to compensate for the thickness of the disc.
