Just a quick simple check... are the wheels in the straight ahead position when you try to engage 4wd? For me they wont engage in any other position.
Also, have you tried pushing the lever down and across to get it into 4wd low?
Another thought, there is a filter on the vacuum pipe under the battery. Sometime it clogs with mud so clean it out and have another try.

Had a bit of a play with bits and managed to get the 4WD light flashing so removed a hub and had a fiddle, put it back together and now the 4WD light stays on and seems to engage. just heading out to test it. If you hear nothing from me after an hour send a search party

Got to the green lane I was going to test the 4WD out on and as I pulled off the main road onto the track I went to engage 4WD and... Nothing...
What the?!!! Right, it worked 5 minutes earlier so what's changed? I tried 4WD low and still nothing. Ok, time for a look and see if anything's changed... I drove back down the road half a mile or so to a tank turning area where I pulled over. I removed the drivers side hub and had a fiddle to see if I could get it locked manually, everything seemed really stiff. For a comparrison, the passenger hub was also removed and it was completely different. It freewheeld easily, locked with no problems, released with no problems. The vacuum pipes were double and triple checked and all seemd ok. I could feel the vacuum come on and release so that wasn't the issue. I put the hubs back on and drove home to carry out further investigations.
At home I took both hubs off and decided to give them a good clean and re-grease. I then put the passenger side hub on the drivers side and visa versa. Everything was tightened up and the engine fired up, I then engaged 4WD and low and behold, the light came on :woohoo: I tried 4WD low and still on so I knocked it back in to 2WD and had a drive up and down the road, after which I knocked it into 4WD again and it came on :woohoo: :woohoo:
Right back out to test it! Up to the green lane, pulled the lever and 4WD appeared on the dash
I took it down and back up the lane to test it properly through the mud and crap  Still working!! I went back down and up the lane again, just to make doubly sure it was all working you understand   All seemed ok so I drove home. At home I tried the 4WD again and it worked fine...
I think the problem was some crud in the hub that was preventing it locking into place and the strip, clean, and re-grease cured it.
As a reward for working again, I took it to the jet wash and give it a good high pressure blast off
Thanks to all those who suggested what could be the issue.
