Thanks, that's kinda why I asked. I have had all sorts of issues on almost every other car i have had. I guess I need to get hold of a boroscope and have a proper look at the bits I can't see. It may well not be the pump but if I know what it is I can decide what to do.

I had to change my Pajero pump a few years back. It has a connector that is push fit and it's a bloomin' weakness. I used a coolant additive to stop it; I think it was Barrs leaks as the others are rubbish. I find the leak usually occurs at the bearing and sometimes it gets noisy, sometimes not, but the tell tale giveaway is a drip drip drip. Sometimes Barrs leaks can expand the seal enough to stop it.

Not having a bl car from the 1970s with porous castings i am deeply suspicious of products like bars leaks, I worry that they are clogging fine galleries and passages that should not be. I'm sure that in reality they are ok but stuff like that sets off my paranoia.

Right, well, I noticed a bit of a damp patch under the front of the car yesterday in the works car park and closer inspection reports that the fan pulley was wet and on starting the belt had a little bit of a screach. New pump time by virtue of everything above it being dry.

47 quid later and a half hours work and i have a functioning water pump. Definitely the culprit as once i got the old one off it was covered in shmoo and I suspect it has been unwell far longer than I have been experiencing actual symptoms. Anyway seems that not everything lasts forever.
