Hi, typically how long do vvt water pumps last and is the failure mode normally to drip a little bit before the bearing starts getting noisy? A short while ago like within 12 months I replaced the rad as it was split since that disturbed the top hose that was replaced too and new clamps were installed. However I still have a very slight persistent loss of coolant like as about 200 ml every month or two but as yet I have not found where from though occasionally i do find a single drip on a steering bar but not as regularly as I look for the source. I'm not entirely happy throwing parts at it but equally I would be less than happy if it decided to let go on a dales run in the middle of the back of beyond.

So water pump or something else?

No one has ever had a water pump fail? That's impressive.

I've not heard of them failing and mine hasn't!

Neither has the one on my old single cam engined Jimny, which is still in the family. They're generally reliable.

Mine has been using water for the past 10,000 miles (about 500ml every 200 miles) which has now shown itself as a headgasket failing. My experience with these things says you'll spend more time and money trying to prevent it than you will fixing it when it eventually does show itself. I definitely wouldn't go worrying about the water pump when it could be a myriad of other things.

Water pumps fail a lot on in the experience on my motors. Although I haven't had a Jimny one go I have had Vitara, Mitsy, SJ and Ford ones go in the past. Mileage I'd say at about 90000 on average.
