R72 gearbox question was created by Charlie
Hi all - question for the tech gurus:

Did the R72 gearbox/bearing issue ever get solved with the later VVT models? Asking as I am awaiting Jimny no. 3 and as far as I can tell, the new model shares the same gearbox (identical ratios).

Cheers!

Yes it was revised in 2009 with lasting results.

Thank you for both, the info and the welcome! Am a long-time lurker and have been a jimny addict since buying an old silver G13bb model, followed by an M13A and (hopefully) a new one soon. :)

Hi Lambert sorry for my late response in this thread - I've been away a few weeks and still catching up.

Do you know what the revisions actually were that cured the problems?

I stuck my endoscope inside my newer 2012 gearbox and found bearings with green caps over the sides. Could be more changes as well but closed bearings is one difference. My broken 2005 gearbox had open bearings.

Thanks for your reply Yakuza.

Let me get this right; the later 2012 g'box is identical to the R72, including ratios etc (apart from the already noted reliability improvement)??

Yes! My box is 2012 but the improvement came from 2009 models. Most likely at the face-lift with the front bumper.
I did swap over the shift stick assy but I think that was just because my box did not come with it.

There is a less leaky intermediate drive shaft from 2009. Could be smart to buy that as well from the same car as the new gearbox. Your new gearbox last longer with oil in it. :)
