Hello all.

Sorry that my first post is asking you all for help.

I am one week into my Jimny adventure. I have a Jan 2006 with 45K on.
So then I get a wobble, it comes on at 45Mph and then disappears at 50. Its not excessive but I want to get this sorted before it gets worse.

Is this the death wobble or something else? If it is the death wobble then I see you already have a massive topic on it so apologies.

Thanks in advance I really appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks Andy

Welcome to the forum. If it's in such a small range I would check that the wheel mounting faces are clean and tidy and then confirmed that the tyres are balanced. Are the front axle swivel balls dry?

Thanks for your response.
I had the wheels balanced last week. With regards the front swivel balls can you elaborate as to what I am looking for and how to check.

I had no issues at all till the Jimny went for a service. I have spoke with the mechanic and all he did was take the front wheels off to have a good look round.. very strange.
I have tried moving the alloys round a few studs and it seemed to solve it. Apparently not though.

Make sure that the touching face of both the wheel and the hub is meticulously clean even old anti seize paste can be an issue. The swivel balls are the fixed ends of the axle that the wheel hub rotate about dry is good, wet greasy oil is bad.

Also if you have steel wheels insist that the balance is checked using the adapter that uses the bolt holes to secure the wheel to the machine as using the more regular cone thing through the centre of the wheel will give a different result every time.

'stud centric' instead of 'hub centric' balancing... it does make a difference!

The swivels area circled in yellow should be 'dry' not covereed in oil and / or grease.

It's not death wobble as such, more an indication he steering components are worn a little. What Lambert said is good advice. He is referring to the swivel balls at each end of the front axle, the hubs ( hold the wheel and brakes) are mounted to the swivel ball by two kingpin bearings, one at the top, one at the bottom. A wet look around your hub or wheel can be an indication that one of these kingpin bearings has worn, allowing slight wheel wobble and grease to escape from the swivel seal. You can also check by feeling for vertical play in the wheel which does not go away even with someone pressing the brake pedal. This a good indication of kingpin bearing issue.
Horizontal play or play that changes with brakes applied is usually wheel bearing.

Our 2009 had similar symptoms to yours but at the time I was unable to find any issues with bearing play. I fitted a steering damper, which I really like, and everything was good. Fast forward 12 months and I can now feel play in the drivers side kingpin bearing, so its possible this was my original issue. The damper is still doing its job though and I have very little wobble, but it's a job that I need to fix asap.

I am also slow at typing, so the above pictures have beaten my reply, but I hope it helps.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

Mine does exactly the same at the same speed mine though IS due to worn king pin bearings on drivers side, which I'll do shortly.!

I notice you have a great guide available. Is this a DIY with limited experience job or am I best going to a specialist. If so do any of you know a specialist in the Stoke / Stafford area?
