Caution when buying Blue Print ADK82502 cabin filters

Blue Print ADK82502 cabin filters are popular aftermarket choice for Jimnys, and even Martin sells them in his shop.

I have bought at least three of these filters from various sources in the past, and they always used to look the same - two-part sturdy plastic frame, containing carbon (charcoal) imbued paper filter. Well I at least think they had carbon particles in them, as they certainly looked so (they looked "dirty" when new).

However, I recently bought two Blue Print ADK82502 filters from their original distributor, and to my surprise the filters inside were completely different. Although the overall dimensions remain the same, the casing was flimsy one-part, but even more importantly, the filter was a plain blueish paper, with no traces of any carbon (charcoal) in it. So just a plain paper filter.

I of course returned those two filters to the store, and the distributor confirmed to me that all of their current stock of ADK82502 look the same as those two.

It appears the the manufacturer is cheating. How else could would you call the behavior when a manufacturer significantly changes the functional design of a product while keeping its part number the same? Maybe not all ADK82502 filters in the distribution channels have changed. Double check what you buy.

So beware.

But manufacturers reserve the right to alter specifications without notice, what if some ingredients of the old design were found to be toxic, what if some part of the design were affected by new legislation, what if there is a scientific breakthrough that allows the efficiency to be improved significantly? Various sales of goods acts exist to require a product to be fit for purpose, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Filters with activated carbon or charcoal are in a different league than ordinary paper filters.
The former have important additional filtering capabilities which the latter don't.
Also, the former are typically significantly more expensive than the latter.

Educate yourself here.

A manufacturer has the right to change the design and specifications as long as the functionality remains the same. I do not think that has been adhered to in this case at all.

Given that Suzuki didn't see fit to even install a filter in the heater system in my bought new top of the range car instead relying on a mesh screen to keep the bigger ball bearings and gold nuggets out I don't see what difference it makes if an after market supplier chooses to swap between activated charcoal or paper to fit in a space the actual vehicle maker left empty.
